Planning a trip to Europe but need a visa? This guide answers the most frequently asked questions about the Schengen visa, how to apply, required documents, processing times, costs, and common mistakes to avoid.

If you hold a passport that requires a visa to enter Europe, this article will help you navigate the Schengen Visa Application process with clarity and confidence.

What Is a Schengen Visa?

Schengen visa allows travellers to visit up to 29 countries within the Schengen Area using a single visa.

These countries have removed internal border controls, meaning you can travel freely between them once you enter the area.

Popular Schengen Countries Include:

France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, and Greece

If your nationality requires a visa, you must obtain a Schengen visa before traveling.

Who Needs a Visa to Visit Europe?

Citizens of many countries in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East require a Schengen visa before entering a Schengen member country.

To confirm whether you need a Schengen visa:

  • Check the official website of the embassy or consulate of the country you plan to visit first.

  • Confirm based on your passport nationality (not your residence). Example – if you live in the UK, have not yet obtained British Citizenship, hold a Zimbabwean passport, you need to apply for a schengen visa.

What Type of Schengen Visa Do I Need?

Most travelers apply for a Short-Stay (Type C) Schengen Visa, which allows:

  • Tourism

  • Visiting family or friends

  • Business trips

  • Short courses or conferences

  • Transit

I am planning a trip to Europe; can I travel to more than one country during my trip?

This is a question I have received more than once in the last few weeks. I figured if 3 people have asked the same question within that time frame, there are probably more wondering the same. So, while I’ve responded to the DM’s, I thought it prudent to share more information on here.

The answer is yes; your Schengen visa allows you to enter any country within the Schengen area. I advise my clients to travel this way where possible. Its a good way to make the most of your visa costs and the price of your long haul ticket.

Here’s my pro-tip for you:

Your plan needs to be well informed and mapped to make the best use of your time, budget, and any seasonal activities/events you might be interested in. You should apply for your Schengen visa from the embassy whose country you plan to spend the greatest number of days in. This should also ideally be the country of arrival/first entry.

Example:If you plan to spend 5 days in Spain and 3 days in France → apply for your Schengen Visa at the Spanish consulate. If you are interested in Andalucian festivities such as the Ferria de Abril, plan your trip for April. If you are travelling on a budget, plan your trip for the shoulder months (April-May and October-November) or low season (winter months & not during local public holidays).

What Documents Are Required for a Schengen Visa?

While requirements vary slightly by country, most applications require:

1. Completed Visa Application Form

2. Valid Passport

  • Issued within the last 10 years

  • Valid at least 3 months after your departure

3. Passport Photos

Must meet Schengen photo specifications.

4. Travel Itinerary

  • Flight reservation

  • Accommodation booking

5. Travel Insurance

Minimum coverage of €30,000 valid across the Schengen Area.

6. Proof of Financial Means

  • Bank statements (usually covering the last 3–6 months)

  • Payslips or sponsorship letter

7. Cover Letter

Explaining purpose of travel and itinerary.

How Much Does a Schengen Visa Cost?

Check with the consulate at which you intend to apply for your schengen visa as it varries by consulate and according to accepted currencies in the country from which you are applying. Additional service fees may apply if applying through a visa centre.

How Long Does Processing Take?

Standard processing time: 15 calendar days

However, it can take:

  • 3–4 weeks during peak season

  • Longer if additional documents are requested.

  • Processing time also varies between consulates as some are busier than others due to destination popularity. Consulates which are authorised to process visas for countries other than their own tend to be busier than those which process only for their country.

Tip: Apply at least 4–6 weeks before travel.

Can I Travel to the UK with a Schengen Visa?

No.

The United Kingdom is not part of the Schengen Area. You need a separate UK visa if required for your nationality.

How long will my Tourist Visa allow me to stay in the Schengen zone?

The most you can get for a Type C (Short Stay) Schengen Visa is 90 days. The number of days you will actually be given, corresponds to the proof of finances you provide with your visa application. Applicants are required to have a specific amount of money for their daily upkeep while visiting a Schengen member country. The total amount you have in your statement, divided by the stipulated daily spend = total number of days you will be given for your stay *

So, if your finances show that you will only be able to support yourself for 15 days while in the country to which you wish to travel, you will likely be given 15 days. Or less. *

How long can I stay in Europe if my nationality does not require a visa?

Your stay within the Schengen Area is limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. That is a single trip to the Schengen zone. You cannot stay in one country for 90 days then cross into another country for 90 more within the same 180-day cycle. You visit the zone, stay for a maximum of 90 days, including arrival and departure dates, then must leave and make your next trip after 180 days.

Remember

The information provided on this page is to give you a starting point. I strongly advise contacting the embassy of the country(ies) you wish to visit as information often changes to meet current objectives and other factors which affect travel and immigration laws.

*Embassies reserve the right to exercise discretion when processing visa applications

There are several variables which may or may not affect your application at any given time. Two people with similar documents and situation may not always get the same response. Your visa application is at the mercy of whoever's desk it lands on. Sometimes, it comes down to sheer luck.

What Are the Most Common Reasons for Visa Refusal?

Understanding refusal reasons helps you avoid mistakes people make when applying for a Schengen Visa.

Top reasons include:

  • Insufficient financial proof

  • Unclear travel purpose

  • Incomplete documentation

  • Lack of strong ties to home country

  • Suspicious travel history

What Happens If My Visa Is Refused?

You will receive a refusal letter stating the reason.

You can:

  • Appeal the decision (if permitted by the issuing country)

  • Reapply with stronger documentation

How to Increase Your Chances of Approval

Follow these best practices:

✔ Submit complete documentation

✔ Provide genuine flight and hotel reservations

✔ Show consistent bank activity

✔ Write a clear, professional cover letter

✔ Demonstrate strong ties to your home country (job, family, business)

✔ Never overstay a visa, you want to keep your travel history as clean

Can I Extend My Schengen Visa?

Extensions are granted only in exceptional circumstances such as:

  • Medical emergencies

  • Force majeure

  • Humanitarian reasons

Tourism extensions are rarely approved.

I live in Europe legally and hold a permit from a Schengen Country. Do I need a visa to visit other Schengen countries?

No you do not need a visa. You can travel between member countries of the Schengen zone freely as long as you return to the country issuing your residence permit. A stay of more than 3 months (90 days) would require triggering application for a residency permit of the country you are visiting. As, by this point, you are not considered to just be visiting. Before you book a trip, ensure your permit has validity to cover that trip. It’s best to not cross into another country with a permit which is about to expire. You should also generally trigger renewal of your permit well before the expiry date, even if you don’t plan to travel.

Quick Answers

How early can I apply?

Up to 6 months before travel.

Do I need confirmed flight tickets?

Most embassies accept reservations. It’s safer to pay for your ticket once your visa is approved.

Do I need to pay for the accommodation booking?

No. Book with free cancellation & a pay when you stay clause

Do previous refusals affect new applications?

Yes, but you can overcome them with improved documentation.

Can I visit multiple countries with one visa?

Yes, within the Schengen Area, without exceeding the number of days on your visa.

Final Thoughts

Applying for a Schengen visa may seem complicated, but preparation and accuracy significantly improve your chances of approval. Double-check document requirements, prepare your application ensuring consistency across all documents and submit your Schengen Visa application early.

With the right preparation, your trip to Europe can begin smoothly and stress-free.
